who am I ?

1 minute read

So, I’m Silvio, statistician, data scientist and Ph.D. student, with skills in statistical learning, probability, and statistical modeling. My main projects are on this website, and involve problems with the classification and segmentation of images and music, using statistical and machine learning techniques.

what kind of research have I done so far?

The main researches I developed was during the master’s degree, where, in my master’s thesis, I studied and compared some methods for modeling mortality, such as: least squares and weighted least squares method, and Poisson and Binomial Negative regressions .

I compared the performance of these modeling methods in the Gompertz, Gompertz-Makeham, Gamma-Gompertz and Gamma-Gompetz-Makeham mortality models. I also proposed two new mortality models, based on mixture models, where one of these allows the existence of a plateau for mortality.

Finally, in my thesis, the closed-form expression of life expectancy for the Gamma-Gompertz and Gamma-Gompertz-Makeham models was also presented.

but what is the reason for this site?

I decided to create this site to divulge a little of what I’ve been doing in the academia, and also some personal projects in data science. I’ll also post some thoughts, data analysis tips, theorems and important definitions in statistic and data science, and more that I find interesting to share here.

and what do I do for a living?

I keep studying. I have been conducting research together with professors Fredy Castellares and Artur Lemonte, both from Brazilian universities, and have made some contributions in theoretical statistical modeling for demographic and actuarial sciences. But I’m not restricted to theoretical statistical research, and my research interests go far beyond that.

one more thing

I’m currently focused on using data science to answer demographic and actuarial questions. And as these questions never end, I hope this site is always under construction.

Enjoy it !
